With the snow melting, it’s time to start thinking of the summer garden. There are some excellent resources shared on a recent (4/8/14) webinar Planning for a Successful Gardening Year.
- Cover crops for the home garden. Cover crops are grown to enrich soil, improve its structure, enhance growth of subsequent crops, and reduce erosion.
- Mulches for home gardens and plantings. Mulches can help control weeds, regulate soil temperature, help retain soil moisture and help to reduce erosion.
- The vegetable garden. This important resource includes a planting guide and helpful hints for a successful garden season.
Print copies of these and many other resources are available from the Learning Store.
Another good source of information is the Wisconsin Master Gardener program. This dedicated group of county Extension educators and community volunteers shares their expertise for successful gardening year round.
A discussion of successful gardening often involves questions related to composting. This is one area where food safety matters!
Happy gardening! Barb
