2012 Incadescent Light Bulbs Phase-Out: Deadline Extended from Jan. 1 to Oct. 1

(updated 12/28/11) Phase-out deadline was recently extended to October 1, 2012.

New federal rules designed to save energy, will require more efficient lighting systems for farms, businesses and homes. Starting January 1, 2012 , a new law raises efficiency standards for light bulbs. Requirements will first target the phase-out of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, and 75, 60 and 45-watt bulbs will follow over the next two years.  The technology to meet these standards by using fluorescent, halogen and other lights already exists. However, farmers and rural home owners may need to make additional changes, since many buildings have lighting systems wired for the standard incandescent bulbs.
